Olden Cruise Port Guide
Shore excursions, honest costs & what you really need for a perfect day among glaciers and fjords
NORWAY – SOGNEFJORD REGION
Olden
Olden isn’t your typical cruise port. There’s no city to stroll through, no busy shopping street, no cathedral to tick off the list. What you get instead is something far more memorable: some of the most dramatic fjord and glacier scenery in all of Norway, right on your doorstep.
For cruise passengers, that means one thing — your day here is entirely shaped by the choices you make in the first 30 minutes. The highlights aren’t within walking distance, but they’re absolutely reachable on your own if you move quickly. And moving quickly, as I found out, makes all the difference.
I visited Olden on a morning when the forecast was gloom and the reality was glorious sunshine — which taught me the most important lesson about this port: be flexible, be ready, and don’t overthink it. This guide gives you everything you need to make the most of your time ashore.

Independent or Guided — What Works Best in Olden?
Olden is one of those ports where going independent genuinely pays off — both in flexibility and in your wallet. Most of the big highlights are easy to reach on your own, and the savings versus booking through your cruise line can be significant. That said, there are a couple of experiences where a guide earns their fee. Here’s the honest breakdown.

Loen Skylift — The View That Defines Olden
The Loen Skylift takes you from sea level to over 1,000 metres in just five minutes — and the panorama at the top is one of the most spectacular in all of Norway. Fjords, lakes, glaciers and snow-capped peaks in every direction. If there's one thing you do in Olden, this is it. Go early, move fast, and you'll have the platform almost to yourself before the organised groups arrive.

Briksdal Glacier
One of Norway's most accessible glaciers — a dramatic combination of ice, waterfalls and valley scenery. Best reached as a guided excursion; the transfer is longer and the logistics more complex than the Skylift.

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
A relaxed, heated way to cover the valley highlights — Laukifossen waterfall, the Melkevollbreen glacier viewpoint and the outlet store. Perfect if the weather closes in or you've spent the morning at altitude.

Kayak & RIB Boat on the Fjord
Get out on the water and see Olden from a completely different angle. The towering mountain walls look even more dramatic from sea level — a great alternative for active travellers who want something beyond the peaks.

FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE
My Olden Shore Day
I’ll be honest: Olden wasn’t on my radar as a stand-out stop. And then the morning happened.

The Sail-In That Sets the Tone
We were up on deck at 6am as the ship moved through the fjord towards Olden. Glassy water, clear skies, mountains reflected perfectly on the surface. The forecast had promised clouds — the sky had other ideas. That moment alone told me we needed to move fast when we docked.

Move Fast — Buy Local
The moment the gangway was down, we were off. At the pier, local operators were selling combined shuttle and Skylift tickets for a fraction of what the ship was charging. We jumped on immediately, and were at the gondola base before most people had finished breakfast. Being first up the mountain made a real difference.

Snow, Silence & a View You Won't Forget
We stepped out of the gondola into knee-deep snow. In spring. Not what we'd expected — even though we'd dressed warmly. The view, though, was extraordinary. Fjords in every direction, lakes below us, mountains still wearing their winter white. We had it almost to ourselves for the first 20 minutes.

The Hike We Had to Abandon
After coffee at the summit café we set off on the Skåla walking trail — about 1.8km to a glacier viewpoint. The path was packed snow, mostly solid, but there were patches of ice requiring real care. Going uphill through snow is far more demanding than it sounds. We made it to a brilliant viewpoint before having to turn back — my son's shoes had completely soaked through.

The Heated Bus That Saved the Afternoon
Back in Olden with wet shoes and -7°C temperatures, we switched straight to the HoHo bus. Two stops — Laukifossen waterfall and the Melkevollbreen glacier viewpoint — plus a wonderfully warm interior that my son declared the best part of the day at that particular moment. For an afternoon when the weather closes in, it's the perfect call.

The Return — and an Unexpected Lesson
Back aboard by 16:30 — tired, damp, genuinely buzzing. Our plan had been to decompress at the pool. What we found was a ship fuller than any sea day — apparently everyone had the same idea. The Beach Club and pool decks were packed solid. We ended up in the Theatrium with hot drinks, which turned out to be exactly the right call.
HONEST COSTS
What Does a Day in Olden Actually Cost?
Norway is expensive — that’s just the reality. But Olden is one of those ports where smart choices make a big difference. The cruise line markup on excursions here is particularly steep, so knowing the independent rates is genuinely useful.
| Activity | EUR | USD (approx.) | GBP (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loen Skylift gondola — adult, return | €60 | $70 | £52 |
| Briksdal Glacier guided tour (incl. transfer) | €50 | $58 | £43 |
| Hop-On Hop-Off Bus (full loop) | €35 | $40 | £30 |
| Kayak or RIB boat tour | €95 | $111 | £82 |
| Typical full day (Skylift + shuttle + HoHo + food) | €100–110 | $116–128 | £86–95 |
Three ways to keep costs down in Olden
- Buy your Loen Skylift shuttle and gondola tickets from local operators at the pier — not the cruise line desk. Identical service, 30–50% less money.
- Don't try to do both the Skylift and Briksdal Glacier in one day unless your port time is 9+ hours. Pick one and do it properly.
- Card payments are accepted everywhere in Norway — no need to carry Norwegian kroner. Skip the currency exchange fees.
PORT VERDICT
Is Olden Worth It? My Honest Rating
Olden is one of those ports that sounds modest on the itinerary and then completely surprises you. It’s not a city, it’s not a cultural destination — it’s raw, dramatic Norwegian nature, and if the weather cooperates even slightly, it delivers some of the most memorable moments of any Norway cruise.
My Verdict on Olden
Olden punches well above its weight. For a village of barely 500 people, the access to world-class natural experiences is extraordinary — and the Loen Skylift alone makes this port a must-do on any western Norway itinerary. The scenery is genuinely hard to top anywhere in Scandinavia.
Come prepared for cold and changeable mountain weather, don't underestimate the altitude, and you'll leave with memories that last well beyond the cruise. I'd return in a heartbeat — next time with proper boots.
Great for
- Nature lovers and photographers
- Active travellers who want more than a town walk
- Families comfortable with outdoor activities
- Anyone who wants a genuine fjord experience
Less ideal for
- Travellers looking for city culture or history
- Those who prefer staying close to the ship
- Anyone unprepared for cold mountain weather

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions Olden Cruise Port
Is Olden worth visiting on a cruise?
Olden is absolutely worth visiting on a cruise, particularly for travellers who enjoy nature and outdoor activities. The Loen Skylift offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of Norway, the Briksdal Glacier is within easy reach, and the fjord scenery throughout the day is consistently outstanding. Even a short port stop here delivers memories that last well beyond the cruise.
What can you do in Olden on a cruise?
In Olden, cruise passengers can ride the Loen Skylift gondola for panoramic fjord views, join a guided excursion to the Briksdal Glacier, explore the valley on the Hop-on Hop-off bus, kayak or take a RIB boat out on Nordfjord, or simply stroll through the small village and its cafés. Most activities can be arranged independently on the day, directly at the pier.
Can you explore Olden independently without a cruise ship tour?
Yes — Olden is well suited to independent exploration. The pier is in the heart of the village, and local operators sell shuttle and Loen Skylift tickets directly at the dock at significantly lower prices than cruise line excursions. The Hop-on Hop-off bus is also easy to join on the day. The main exception is the Briksdal Glacier, which is more comfortably reached on a guided tour due to the transfer distance.
How much does the Loen Skylift cost from a cruise ship stop?
The Loen Skylift gondola costs approximately €60 / $65 USD / £52 per adult for a return ticket. A local shuttle from the Olden pier to the Skylift base station costs around €10 / $11 USD / £9 per person. Buying both from a local operator at the pier rather than through your cruise line is significantly cheaper — the same experience for around 30–50% less.
What should you wear for a cruise stop in Olden?
You should dress in warm, waterproof layers for a cruise stop in Olden, regardless of the season. Even in late spring and summer, temperatures at altitude can drop well below freezing, and snow on the hiking trails is common. Waterproof walking boots are strongly recommended if you plan to use the Loen Skylift and explore the trails at the top. A light rain layer is worth packing even on sunny mornings — the weather in the fjords can change quickly.
How far is the Loen Skylift from Olden cruise port?
The Loen Skylift base station is approximately 7–8 kilometres from the Olden cruise pier. Local shuttle buses cover this distance in around 10–15 minutes and depart from the dock throughout the morning. You do not need to pre-book — tickets are available on the day from operators at the pier.
Is Olden an expensive port to visit on a cruise?
Olden is an expensive destination, as is all of Norway, but there are ways to manage costs. Booking excursions and transport directly from local operators at the pier rather than through your cruise line saves significantly — often 30–50% on the same shuttle and gondola combination. Card payment is accepted everywhere in Norway, so you will not need Norwegian kroner in cash.
What is the best time of year to visit Olden on a cruise?
The best time to visit Olden on a cruise is between May and September, when days are long and the weather is most stable. Late May and early June offer the dramatic contrast of spring greenery against snow-capped peaks. Midsummer brings the warmest conditions and the greatest chance of clear skies at altitude. Note that snow at the top of the Loen Skylift is possible even in June, so waterproof gear is always advisable regardless of the month.
